Hearing Australia is a statutory authority constituted under the Australian Hearing Services Act 1991. Hearing Australia is the largest provider of government-funded hearing services in Australia. One of their areas of interest is hearing testing and rehabilitation of children under the age of 26.

Its research division, the National Acoustic Laboratories, broadly focuses its research into the areas of hearing assessment, hearing loss prevention, hearing rehabilitation devices, and hearing rehabilitation procedures.

Hearing Australia is the current incarnation of the Acoustic Research Laboratory that was set up in 1942. Its initial purpose was the investigation of noise on behalf of the Australian Military during World War II. After the war it helped those children whose hearing was affected by earlier rubella outbreaks.

The Commonwealth Department of Health (now the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing) took over the Laboratory and was renamed the Commonwealth Acoustic Laboratories, with the aim of providing hearing services for children and veterans. It was in 1973 renamed the National Acoustic Laboratories.

The Australian Hearing Services Act 1991 established it as Australian Hearing Services, a Commonwealth Government statutory authority. The name National Acoustic Laboratories was retained for its research division. When the Department of Human Services (now Services Australia) was formed in 2004, the agency now known as Australian Hearing was moved into its portfolio. Although a statutory authority Hearing Australia "largely operates on a ‘for profit’ basis in competition with other hearing clinics".^[8]

• บุคคลที่มีอายุต่ำกว่า 26 ปี (ก่อนวันที่ 1 มกราคม 2555 สิทธิ์จะหมดไปเมื่ออายุ 21 ปี)
• ผู้ถือบัตรสิทธิพิเศษสำหรับผู้รับบำนาญ หรือผู้อุปการะของผู้ถือบัตรดังกล่าว
• ผู้ที่ได้รับเงินช่วยเหลือค่าป่วยจากCentrelinkหรือผู้ที่อยู่ในอุปการะของผู้ที่ได้รับเงินช่วยเหลือดังกล่าว
• ผู้ถือบัตรสุขภาพเพื่อการกลับคืนสู่ถิ่นฐานระดับทอง ของกระทรวงกิจการทหารผ่านศึกหรือผู้อุปการะของผู้ถือบัตรดังกล่าว
• ผู้ถือบัตรสุขภาพเพื่อการกลับคืน สู่สังคมของกระทรวงกิจการทหารผ่านศึก (White Repatriation Health Card) ที่ระบุว่ามีปัญหาทางการได้ยิน หรือผู้อุปการะของผู้ถือบัตรดังกล่าว
• บุคลากรของกองทัพออสเตรเลีย
• ชนพื้นเมือง อะบอริจินและชาวเกาะทอร์เรสสเตรทที่มีอายุ 50 ปีขึ้นไป
• ชนพื้นเมือง อะบอริจินและชาวเกาะทอร์เรสสเตรทที่เข้าร่วมโครงการพัฒนาชุมชนและการจ้างงาน (CDEP)
• ผู้ที่ต้องการบริการด้านการได้ยินเฉพาะทางผ่านโครงการบริการชุมชน (Community Service Obligations: CSO) ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการบริการด้านการได้ยิน

นอกจากนี้ Hearing Australia ยังให้บริการด้านการได้ยินแบบส่วนตัวแก่ผู้ที่ไม่เข้าข่ายตามที่กล่าวมาข้างต้นด้วย
